Whether you’re getting a brand new set of roommates this semester or you’ve had the same roommates all four years of college, you’re probably excited to make fun memories alongside the people you’ll be sharing a home with.

If you’re new to having roommates, you might be feeling a little nervous, especially if you don’t know who they’re going to be. Are you wondering how you’re going to have fun with a bunch of strangers who may or may not have the same interests as you? Or what kind of things strangers can do to get to know one another and have a good time?

Even if you know your roommates already and you’ve been living with them for a while now, you might be looking for fun stuff you and your roomies can get into during the new school year that goes beyond the occasional night out drinking.

Really, you just want to have a great time this school year with your new and/or old friends! Here’s a list of 11 fun ideas that you and your roommates can do in the upcoming school year that will bring you closer and create some awesome memories.

1.) Schedule movie nights

Chances are someone in your shared home is the owner of a Netflix account. If not, someone needs to get an account, ASAP, or dust off the DVD player so you guys can use that for a mandatory all-nighter filled with your favorite movie titles.

Make some popcorn, bust out the drinks and snacks, and have a full night of movies. Let everyone pick out one of their favorite movies to play or, if possible, have everyone decide on a movie. The first option lets you get to know your roommate a little better, or at least get a sense of what kind of movies they’re into. Enjoy a night full of laughter and good snacks!

2.) Go to a school game

Round up your roommates and head to one of your school’s big games. You don’t have to get all decked out in school colors and paint your face if that’s not your thing; just be yourself. Have a great time hanging out with your roommates, enjoying the atmosphere, and cheering on your school.

3.) Take a class together

If you both can take the same class together and it counts as credit towards completing your degree, why not go for it? You’ll have an automatic familiar face in class, plus you’ll have someone to swap notes and compare homework with.

4.) Plan a weekend trip

This is one that I’ve personally always wanted to do. Plan for a short road trip to a cool place that everyone is interested in seeing. On a weekend where no one in your home has anything important planned, gather your things and hit the road together!

Sing your favorite songs on the way there, stop and try some questionable gas station food, and then have the time of your lives at your destination. Some fun places to consider going are the beach, a national park, a theme park, or wherever you and your roommates are interested in visiting.

 5.) Do a game night

Nothing builds (and playfully ruins) friendships like board games, card games, and video games. Get your roommates together for a night that you’ll be laughing (and arguing) about for days after.

6.) Try something new and exciting together

I feel like one of the best ways to get closer to someone is trying something no one in your group has tried before. You can take a dancing class, art class, or cooking class, try sky-diving or bungee-jumping (if you’re more on the extreme side), go scuba-diving, kayaking, get haircuts together, buy some crazy clothes together. Whatever fits you and your roommates, do it together and have fun!

7.) Explore similar hobbies and interests

If you’re both into music, you can try going to a concert together. If you’re gamers, enter local gaming competitions together or switch usernames and team up to face opponents online. If you find out that you’re both into the same types of things, be it politics, film, comic books, or something else, you have an automatic buddy to bring along to stuff that you know you’ll both enjoy.

8.) Exchange meals

Try out new recipes and let your roommates be the judge of your cooking capabilities. Set up days where each of you can cook dinner for the other people in the house. You get a chance to try a different style of cooking and it saves each of you a couple nights out of the week of cooking.

9.) Go to a campus event

There’s nothing wrong with going to places alone. But when you have roommates, it’s fun to go places, especially on campus, and have fun together. Go to a couple of campus events together and join some interesting clubs together. You’ll learn about the other person’s interests and have a great time.

10.) Host a study party

If you both have a big exam coming up and you’re not the type of person who prefers to study alone, host a small study party with your household. Bring out some brain food and encourage everyone in the room to stay up and finish their entire study guide. (Lucky them, they have a study guide).

11.) Pick out furniture

Get everyone together and hit up a furniture store or a local thrift store and pick out some new things for the house.

Whatever you decide to do, make sure it’s tailored to fit you and your roommates. I hope you all have a wonderful semester. Make some great memories with your roommates!
